Maternity Care Assistant Program (MCA)

Maternity Care Assistant means an employee who works in a supportive role to the midwifery team and is able to perform tasks relating to the care of pregnant women, new mothers, babies and their wellbeing. They take a housekeeping role to create an environment that is welcoming and supportive of families. They work solely under the direction and supervision of a midwife.

MATERNITY CARE ASSITANTS ARE NOT MIDWIVES OR NURSES; NEITHER ARE THEY TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS. THEY ARE MATERNITY SUPPORT WORKERS.

Their duties include:

Record Keeping & Documentation

Provide support, companionship and care to maternity patients.

Vital signs assessment

Perform observations on neonates which include Temperature, Respirations, heart rate and blood glucose monitoring and report any deviations from normal.

Understand and respond to clinical emergencies.

Educating mothers

Support mothers with the introduction of infant feeding

And lots more…

Every mother goes through unbearable pain and immense risks while in labour. They require proper care and assistance to undergo the whole process. The Maternity Care Assistant Program is built to train interested individuals to support the mothers through the tough times and provide care to the child. The Maternity Care Assistant Program is designed to equip you with the skills and abilities of a proficient maternity care assistant.

While in school, you will be instructed on a broad range of subjects, including infection control, communication and interpersonal skills, safety and emergency procedures, medical terminology and abbreviation used in maternity care, reproductive anatomy and psychology and fundamental skills to provide antenatal, intrapartum care and postnatal care. You will gain the real-life knowledge, skills, and competence required to support the midwife in a maternity facility, all taught in a friendly welcoming student-centered learning environment with Professional Midwives to teach, instruct,  support, mentor, and guides you through the skills, knowledge, and understanding of maternity care support.

This is a NVQ 4 professional training (equivalent to NHS Band 3), that impacts the knowledge, skills and equips you to work under the supervision of a Midwife.
